About:
This art gallery showcases Western European art ranging from mid 1200s - 1900. The gallery began in1824 after the death of a wealthy art collector called John Julius Angerstein. His dear friend, Sir George Beaumont, encouraged the government to buy his deceased friends art collection and in return he would offer up his own collection so that people of all ages and backgrounds could have their own art resource. It moved to this purpose built building in the late1830s. Today there are about 2300 paintings in its collection ranging from artistic movements such as the renaissance to impressionism and landscapes to portraits.
